Orkney Inter-County - Season 2003-2004
'A' Team beaten but 'B' keep shield - 13/03/04 (Away)
Who would've believed it..... Caithness travelled over to Orkney with two strong teams and hopes of pulling back the deficit in the 'A' team were high. The 'B' side should've had no problems lifting the Shield, with a 7-1 start.
The Orkney side had other ideas and with already winning all the mens' matches in the 'A' group, in Caithness, they had all the fire power to do this again. Could they do it, though...?? Well, yes they did.
Good performances from Orkney's young and yet to blossom starlets
- Adam Stanger & Adam Bews took the heads off Caithness's
number one and two, providing the matches of the day. This was
a big win for Stanger, as it was the first time 'Big Bird' had
been beaten in a long-long time.
Caithness ladies faired a lot better, with both Carole's winning
their matches and Jane Grant was unfortunate to lose on the very
last point, due to some dodgy ref calls.
The 'B' side lost the away match but managed to grab enough
games to lift the Shield, on aggregate.
Linda Sinclair was the only Lady to win her match but Lara
Campbell and Kirsty Irons played good games on their debut's and
were unfortunate to go down in close matches.
Donald McIver and Willie Jappy (the 'Old-Men') were the only two victors in the 'B' mens team. Both played with an old school style that can't be taught, which proved difficult for their Orkney counterparts to handle.
Thanks to Orkney for their excellent hospitality, once again and hope you are ready for us next year..... Because we are gonna get that trophy back......

Tough task for 'A' Team - 22/11/03 (Home)
A good day of exciting squash took place in Wick Squash courts for the first tie of the Orkney Inter-County match. Unfortunately, Orkney were unable to tempt two extra Ladies over the Pentland Firth, which gave Caithness 'B' team a two nil start before the starting gun.
The Caithness ladies 'A' team players provided a lifeline for
the lads by winning their three games, which made the final
scoreline a lot more respectable and kept everyone in with a
chance to lift the Robertson Cup, on the return leg.
Although, the Orkney 'A' men managed to conquer in all five
matches, the ties really could have gone in any direction with one
going to a tie break in the last and another finishing 15-13, in
the final set. In all, these matches were difficult to call
and leaves the return journey with a sense of anticipation looming
in the air.
Caithness 'B' trounced the Orkney side, on this occasion, and
never allowed the travelling team an ounce of space to perform.
Young pretenders - Happy Jappy, Sniff, Titch and John Brunton
ambled through their matches and showed the on-looking crowd how
things should be done.
Once again Happy used his own unique style to bamboozle a much
younger opponent, leaving the lad asking the crowd, "what
should I do", Sniff refrained from playing his powerful long
game, sometimes, and mastered the drop shot, Titch only managed to
break-down once in his match, which means he must've been cruising
and John came off the court looking like he could've played
another match. Unfortunately, our 'Karaoke king - Brown eyed
boy' - was pitched against an unknown talent, was unsure of how
to play him and went down 3-1.
Thanks to Mackay's Hotel, Wick for an excellent meal and after party shindig.
