Orkney Inter-County - Season 2005 - 2006 Caithness lose away trip but win overall - 11/03/06 - (Away)
Fifteen intrepid players braved the stormy seas last weekend to contest the return leg of the annual squash challenge between Caithness and Orkney. They went with some confidence, as they were already 8-0 ahead in both the A and B team matches, their most successful home performance ever. The match was not yet won however and Orkney are never easy to beat on home soil. First up were Donald Pollard and Shaun Tait. Shaun took an early lead, with a very tactical game, based on lob serves and accurate drop shots on a very cold court. Donald fought back, taking the second and fourth games but could never keep the tempo up enough to let him control the match and Shaun won 3-2. Les Mackay played Mic Swanney on the glass back court but again Mic's confidence on the cold home court was too much and he won 3-0. Both Les and Donald were hoping to return to Caithness the same day, with Donald heading for Inverness and a cold, wet, half marathon. With one lady missing, the B team had already conceded the 3rd ladies match when Linda Sinclair stepped up to play at 2nd. Unfortunately Orkney had found a very promising new player from the world of badminton, in Christine West. Her great movement and skilful use of the racket more than made up for any lack of experience on the squash court and she had a comfortable 3-0 win. Phineas Miller in his first game for Caithness B met one of the stalwarts of the Orkney game. Mike Stout has played some epic matches for Orkney as number one in the A team, but with the passage of time he has slipped down the list to 5th in the B team. He still had the quality to win his match 3-0. Brian Farmer, another newcomer to inter county squash, played at 4th in the B team, again he met stiff opposition in Michael Scott, who used home court to great advantage to win 3-2, in a match which swung first one way then the other with no real middle ground. The A team were having no better luck, Jane Grant losing to Audrey Poke at 3rd ladies, 3-0 although she might well have won the second in a close 8-10 game. Martin Cook making his first appearance for the county, at 5th in the A team, is an up and coming young player and showed great potential in his match with the experienced Andy Kemp. Andy overcame his first game loss to take the match 3-1. With the score at 4-0, in both the A and B teams for Orkney, a slight nervousness was starting to creep in to the Caithness attitude. However Karen Campbell and Carole Mowat soon put an end to that, with convincing wins over Marie Wylie and ex-Caithness girl, Cath Bremner. Karen, playing at 1st ladies for the B team, showed great tactical awareness to win 3-0, and Carole with a slight hiccup in the second game ran out a 3-1 winner. James Henderson in the unusual position of 4th for the A team met some stiff resistance from Terry Flett but the result was never in doubt as he won 3-1. James Georgeson secured the same winning margin over Rob Crighton at 3rd in the B team with an accurate touch game giving him the edge over a very fit opponent. These four matches were all Caithness was going to win on this trip, as Orkney reasserted control and took the remaining A and B team matches. Willie Jappy lost to Derek Manson 3-1 at 2nd in the B team, Jane Cormack lost in a close 3-2 match at 1st ladies in the A team to her long time adversary Betty Stanger and Davy Swanson lost to a very accomplished Ian Stout 3-0 at 2nd in their A team match. Andrew Bremner, fresh from winning the Wick club championship last weekend was relishing the chance to pit his skills against the best Orkney had to offer. In Adam Stanger he met a worthy adversary, who on home court and in top form, proved a step too far this year. An extremely fast paced and physically tough encounter, left Adam with a 3-1 win and restored some pride for the Orcadians . The final score was 6-2 to Orkney in both the A and B teams but with the 8-0 advantage Caithness enjoyed, from the home encounter, the overall result was a 10-6 win for Caithness in both the A and B teams. The next item on the busy squash calendar is the County Squash Championships, which will be held in Thurso Squash club this weekend, with competition for all age groups. report by James Georgeson Scoresheets
Caithness just too strong - 19/11/05 - (Home) Wick Squash Club recently hosted this seasons first round tie of the Caithness v Orkney Squash Inter-county match. Orkney travelled across the Pentland Firth with a slightly depleted team but still hoped to pull something together for the return match, next year. Overall excellent performances early in the contest from the Caithness Ladies, barely losing a set throughout, - namely, debutant Donna Majilton & Lynne Jones - gave the male 'A' and 'B' teams a good platform to work on and set the concluding demise for the Orkney side. Whether it was due to the Orkney teams top two players being unable to take part in this contest due to injury and illness, which forced their squad to move up two positions in the ladder against, possibly, stronger opposition in the Caithness side, or not - this seemed to have an effect on their overall state of mind and was reflected in the overall result of '8-0' to Caithness, in both the 'A' and 'B' sections. This is not to take anything away from the Caithness line-up as they still had to stay focused and complete the task in hand. Good performances throughout but the highlights were from Louis Brunton, who is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, Andrew Bremner, for winning one of the tough ties of the day and James Henderson, holding on to win against a tricky opponent 3-2. Congratulations to the Caithness squad, as a scoreline like this is very rare, takes a lot of effort to achieve and also holds them in a good position for the return leg to lift the trophies, next year.
