Thurso Club Championships - Season 2005-2006 - 04&05/02/06

Jack Frost may have been forcing us all to wrap up outside but inside the cauldron of Thurso Squash Club for their Annual Club Championships it was light clothing only, as the courts were fired up with aggression, power and excitement to lift the much sought after Ladies and Men's titles.

In the Men's section it was a battle between the now common final participants, James Henderson and Les Mackay, but there are few competitors biting at their heels to 'rock the boat' and sway this meeting.

James was slightly fortunate to have a fairly straight forward route to the final and managed to dispose of the man who introduced him to the sport of squash and claims a stake in his continued insurgence at Thurso Squash Club, Jimmy Cassidy - in the semi-finals.

Les, however, had a couple of tough ties to negotiate before reaching the final.

Alistair Miller was first to try and came close on a number of occasions but Les held fast to progress to the semi's.

A crowd developed expecting big things for Les' semi-final clash against Davie Swanson, and in past encounters it has always provided entertaining outcomes. Davie, possibly, played the wrong combination of shots on a few occasions allowing Les to finish easily but stretched, dodged and scampered to reach Les' short game 'nic' strokes - which came to no avail, as Les booked his place in the final.

As much as Les tried to force James into submission in the final, it was always going to be the latter's name being placed on the trophy. Maybe, it was Les' tough semi-final clash or James' continued power and precision or both, but James still is a force to be reckoned with, even though a Veteran's tag is placed on him.

With a few tournaments remaining this season, Stevie Spargo is going for the full dinner set much to his wife's delight, as for the second tournament in a row he has managed to lift the Plate Trophy. This time around it was a win against James Georgeson which produced a tidy and direct but yet lethargic match, due to the two finalists taking part in long semi-final contests.

The Ladies trophy, for the first time in 19 years, has gone to a new owner. Carole Mowat secured her name on the Thurso Squash Club 'Order of Merit' Board for the first time, something that she has been striving for for a number of years, and to halt Carole Cameron's dominance.

A small entry of players in the Ladies section allowed Carole C a by into the final, whereas, Carole M beat her badminton compatriot, Jane Grant in a semi.

The final became a short affair with the front of the court being each players area of choice for securing points. Carole M proved to be the more clinical of the two and with the younger, flexible and agile frame was able to reach anything thrown at her by Carole C. Carole M finished the match off with a rare drive to the back corner deceiving Carole C.

If this is the end of an era for Carole Cameron, the club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on winning 23 Thurso Club Championship titles, 19 in succession, which has entered her into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Congratulations to all who took part in the event and all the best in the coming tournaments.
