UKAEA Handicap - Season 2005-2006 - 01&02/10/05

This UKAEA Knockout Handicapped trophy takes place over two days, brings a wide variety of players to the scene and contains a main prize winner plus a plate trophy for competitors eliminated in the first round.

The final of the main event brought together two very similar players, Stevie Spargo & Stuart Sutherland, who are currently battling away against each other in the league system and with a difference of only two points, the viewing crowd were looking forward to a good match.

Stevie had the toughest semi-final of the two as he was matched against Les Mackay, the county number two. With Les's style of play making any player push themselves to the limit, Stevie was always going to be coming off the court with aches and pains. But, after a tough three set match Stevie just managed to hold on and make sure of his place in the final.

Stuart had to face the ever improving, Neil Mackay in the other half of the semi's. With Stuart being the fitter and more agile of the pairing and Neil making a couple of costly mistakes, Stuart managed to claw back the difference and book his place in the final.

Going into the final match and as Stevie appeared on court, slowly and slightly dishevelled, the bookmakers money would've been on Stuart to win the trophy. As the game went on, Stuart played a string of unorthodox shots which let Stevie believe in himself and find his 'second wind'. With an added confidence now shining through in his game, Stevie put everything into finishing the competition, as quickly as possible. Although, Stuart should've carried this contest over into a deciding game, as he was 14-11 up, Stevie's extra experience aided him through and he lifted the trophy, much to his relief.

The final of the plate competition was a family event with father Jim Georgeson playing his son John. Both managed to secure their place against each other with wins against Linda Sinclair and Brian Farmer, respectively.

The youngster was the one with the silverware, this time around, but Jim gave his second in command a tough match and managed to recover to the positive side of scoring before John finished the contest off with a tight backhand drive against the wall.

Leslie Mackay, UKAEA Representative - thanked UKAEA for their continued sponsorship, everyone for an excellent tournament and his wife, Kirsty for her catering during the event.
