UKAEA Handicap - Season 2006-2007 - 30&01/09&10/06

The UKAEA Dounreay Knockout Handicapped trophy was the opening tournament of the season for Thurso Squash club and brung together a selection of players to battle against each other for the silverware.

This years main trophy final was to be fought out between two of the up-and-coming players in the club. Sean Miller is a keen young competitor, is desperate to break through into the senior rankings, as soon as possible, and if his performance in this tournament is anything to go by, it won't be too long before the seniors will be sweating and chasing his tight shots. Dougie Wright is a keen all round sportsman, has just recently decided to take part in squash and is definitely grabbing 'the bull by the horns' to progress through the leagues and improve his game. With this in mind and both players playing from scratch, it was going to be a tight final.

Both provided the audience with a good battle, long rallies, powerful drives and neat 'nic' shots but on this occasion it was Dougie who had the edge over Sean and finished the contest with a couple of points to spare.

The plate competition was going to be a battle at the front of the court between our older statesman, Alan Williamson and county ladies' number 1, Carole Mowat. After a series of quick fire points, Alan reaching shots that surprised the crowd and a few rallies, it was the 'wily' Carole who clawed back the difference in points - finishing off the contest with a stifling backhand cross court drive.

Thank you to UKAEA Dounreay for their continued support in this tournament which the club much appreciates.
