County Open Championships - Season 2007-2008 - 15&16/03/08

A large group of highly fuelled competitors with ages ranging from early teens to Over 45, gathered at Thurso Squash Club for this seasons County Championships.

Andrew Bremner is the current holder of the Mens' County Championships event and did not want to part with the trophy he has held for the past three years.  But, he was up against a player who had recently beaten him in an Inter-Town match, 3 sets to 0, Martyn Cook.

After a long serious of strenuous rallies and battles back and forth, it was the current holder, who maybe had that extra piece of passion, grit and determination, that would continue to receive the plaudits as county champion, by tiring out his opponent and winning by 3 sets to 1.

Liam Crombie beat Donald Durrand in the final of the Mens Plate.

A low ladies' county open entry meant that it was to be Carole Mowat against Donna Majilton in the final.

Donna managed to beat Stephanie Campbell in the semi but was desperate to get something out of Carole, who she has been paired up against on many occasion this season, without any joy.

Carole was going for her fourth title in-a-row and, although Donna managed to take one set, the more experienced player just had that edge and went onto lift the silverware by 3 sets to 1.

The winner of the Veterans' event (Over 45's) began his preparation for this tournament in a very positive frame of mind and was in no charitable mood to allow, any player, the chance to lift this title.

Stuart Greig ousted favourite, Donald Pollard in the semi and continued to produce the goods against a battling, James Georgeson to win this coveted trophy.

Currently, one of, if not the most creative and dominant squash players in the county, at the front of the court - and, still at the alarmingly young age of 14, Jamie Henderson has bombarded senior and junior players into submission on many occasions, this season.  This tournament was to prove no different.

The youngster lifted the Under 15 title from an ever improving and promising, Owen Harrold.  Owen hasn't been playing this sport for very long but already shows signs of a natural talent, which bodes well for the future and certainly made Jamie stretch for every point.

Liam Crombie was the next to try and stop Jamie, in the Under 19 event, and with the latter just loosing out in a previous match, it was always going to be a 'tasty' confrontation.

With a healthy audience surrounding the show court, they were not to be let down  The two players produced the goods and after lengthy rallies, excellent retrievals it was to be Jamie that would be victorious on this occasion by 3 sets to 1.

Fergus Richards beat Dillon Hutchinson in the Under 19 plate and Kobe Sutherland beat Sean Fraser in the Under 15 plate final.

Stephanie Campbell continues to grow in stature and managed to lift the Girls' title by beating Amelia Mackay.

Congratulations to ALL of the junior coaches - namely, Ian Adamson, Jim Georgeson, Sandy Stewart and Donald Durrand, as this tournament has shown there is a large amount of talent coming through the ranks.
