County Open Championships - Season 2008-2009 - 14&15/03/09

Wick Squash Club hosted this seasons' County Squash Open which provided a number of surprises and exciting matches throughout the tournament.
With Andrew Bremner fresh from winning the Thurso Club championships, completing the double was the only thing on his mind.
Young Jamie Henderson had other ideas in a tough semi-final contest against Andrew, where a variation of power, speed, deception and accuracy kept the competitors on their toes and the crowd in anticipation of what was going to happen next.
Eventually, on this occasion, Andrew provided the goods and edged out the 'whipper-snapper' but Jamie will be back to amend the scoreline in the coming seasons.
In the other semi-final, the punters' money would've been strongly on Martyn Cook to move onto the final, as he has hit an excellent piece of form recently - and, after going 2-0 infront it looked like a formality. But, not to be outdone, Ian Adamson dug in and produced his best squash of the season to bring the tie back to even.

Ian is renowned for being a fast starter and ebbing away in the final stages!!! Not on this occasion. As he bit down on the job in hand and finished the match off convincingly with a couple of points to spare.
The exertions from the semi-final left Ian with little to give in the final and Andrew strolled home to complete his task in hand.
Dougie Sinclair blew away the youngsters in the earlier rounds of the Mens' plate but a forever injured (!!!), Seanie Miller was too wise to his style and won this trophy.
Carole Mowat proved too strong for the rest of the pack in the Ladies' event and lifted the title for the fourth time in a row and sixth overall.
Donna Majilton battled well in the final, Mairi Vines keeps improving in every tournament and it was good to see Carole Cameron back in action after having the whole bottom half of her body replaced (well, hip joints).

Colourful character and current holder of the Over 45 county trophy, Stuart Greig was in no generous mood to allow his trophy to disappear from his clutches.
Although being blessed with a bye to the final due to an earlier round retirement, his opponent, Donald Durrand was more than capable to rock the boat.
After a lung bursting four sets with both players equalling each other out and giving everything, it was down to the final set.
With the crowd euphoric, there was only ever going to be one outcome to this game, 'down to the final point'.
Greigie held his nerve and, some might say, ended the final of the weekend with glory, much to his delight.
A slightly disjointed Under 19 boys' draw brought together finalists, Jamie Henderson and Dexter Durrand.
After losing out in the main event semi-final, Jamie was never going to be forgiving, piled the pressure on Dexter from the start and eventually ran out winner.

Young Gary Beales is fast becoming a regular on the Scottish squash scene for his age group and, although Kobe Sutherland battled well - the experience shone through for Gary to take the Under 15 title.
Stephanie Campbell added to her Under 19 girls' trophy by winning the plate competition of the Under 15 boys' event, aswell.
Thurso youngster, Eilidh Paterson managed to beat her nemesis, Amelia Mackay in the Under 15 Girls' event to secure a double in the Club and County tournaments.
Congratulations to Wick Squash Club for hosting an excellent event, to the ladies/blokes for the food, drinks and hospitality during the weekend and all the best for the future.
