DSRL Handicap - Season 2008-2009 - 11-12/10/08

As if winning the Thurso Squash Club League trophy was not enough, Dougie Sinclair continued his dominance by securing a second title, the DSRL Handicap Open Event, in a space of two weeks.
This is a two day event and judging by the body language from some of the competitors, they wished it could be stretched to a third.
A high majority of games throughout the tournament extended to the full quota of points possible, which always proves to be an exciting contest for the players and spectators to watch. This was never so apparent than in the final between Dougie Sinclair (-30) and Martin Sutherland (-25).
With the match sitting at one game all, both finishing 15-14, a final push was required by both players and they didn't let the accumulating audiences' expectations down.
Battling point for point in varying lengths of rally, it was never clear who would have the nerve to 'step up to the plate' and finish this contest. But, it was the elder statesman who had the experience and nerve to 'sneak' in a cheeky drop shot that Martin had no chance of retrieving, to win 15-14 in the last.

An excellent and worthy ending to two days of hard squash, although I'm sure these players would've liked an easier task.
The plate contest brought Donald Pollard (-42) and Jim Sangster (-15) together.
Jim has just returned to the indoor sport, having graced the fairways of Thurso Golf Club over the summer period and, was maybe looking to have a few more games under his belt before entering this enduring tournament. Nonetheless, he battled well and stretched the match to a three setter with some worthy strokes and retrievals.
However, Donald's fitness, power and trademark drives ground him out, leaving Jim 'chasing rainbows' in the final game - to deservedly take the plate trophy home.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and as this is the start of the new season, Thurso Squash Club is always looking for new members. Come and have a go.
