eBiGH.com Handicap Event - Season 2008-2009 - 27/06/09

Main event winner (right) and runner-up

With temperatures roaring to record highs over the weekend, it seemed farcical to hold an indoor squash event, deny competitors any comfort of enjoying their rare chance of sunshine and go into chameleon mode from 'milk bottle' to 'san tropez' complexions! But, how were the organisers to know and the event continued.

This was the end of season Thurso Squash Club - eBiGH.com Handicap event and a fairly healthy number of twenty made themselves available for this one day tournament.

Various comments were made regarding how hot it was during play but everyone was unsure if this was related to the outside conditions or, the cracking matches of squash taking place on the day.

After an eventful set of ties, the final brought together, Dougie Sinclair (-28) and youngster, Jamie Henderson (-50).

The youngster is a master at the front of the court and has a bag full of deceptive shots he can use to baffle his opponent - but, elder statesman, Dougie is renowned for his touch in this area, aswell.

Jamie failed to pull back the deficit in the first set but this was purely down to a barrage of masterly touches from his opponent, leaving the youngster chasing and grappling for crumbs.

After a close second set and the tie sitting at 12 points all, Dougie had his chance to close out the match but Jamie had other ideas and wearing his opponent out was one of them. He went on to make this tie go all the way and push Dougie even further.

After a tough days squash, Dougie gave his all and produced some fine winners but, Jamie had youth, fitness and extra killing points to lift the final trophy of the season.

The plate competition was won by Steven Craigie after beating another up-and-coming star, Liam Beales, in a tight tie. Liam battled well but the extra power from Steven gave him the edge to secure the win.

Prizes were awarded to the winners of the main event and plate but - unfortunately, Steven Craigie only managed to receive half a box of sweets due to an unwitting spectator divulging the prize through a moment of hunger deprivation, washed down with a touch of apple juice...!!!

Congratulations to everyone who took part and hope to see even more competitors in the 2009-2010 season, starting in September.

Although this was the last event of the 2008-2009 Thurso Squash Club calendar, league matches continue and the club is always looking for new members.
