Wick Inter-County - Season 2008-2009

Contents:- -AWAY- HOME-

Thurso are overwhelming winners this season - 01/02/09 - (AWAY)

Thurso's young captains accept the trophies for their teams-
'B' team, Sean Miller (left) & 'A' team, Jamie Henderson.

Unfortunately, this tie was more-or-less clinched in the first round of the match but pride and glory were very much still rich pickings on the court.

A number of Thurso players were unable to play which left spaces for other club competitors to slot in and earn their first cap and experience of the big time in county squash.

Performances of notice in the 'A' event came from young Wick player, Gavin Majilton who continues to beat experienced players. On this occasion he burst into action and scalped Stuart Greig, grabbing one of Wick's two points.

In the 'B' event, Seanie Miller cruised in what could've been a tricky tie versus Happy Jappy. Mark Mackay grabbed his first club point by winning his match 3-0. Dougie 'The Man' Sinclair returned to the scene and played like he had never been away, winning 3-0. Michelle Cowie, with her new car and 18'zzz, keeps pulling out great performances and never dropped a set to win her tie.

The match of the day was between Stuart Sutherland (Thurso) and returneeeee, Andrew 'Sniff' Robertson (Wick).

Stuart is renowned for an excellent reach and five setter match and this was to be no different.

Sniff has not been playing competitively for a couple of years but is graced with a court in his house that keeps him well oiled for the squash scene.

Sniff started the contest well and went up 2-0 looking like a easy win but in trademark style, Stuart would never let the team or crowd down, found his touch and pulled out all the stops to take the match to a final set.

There was nothing to stop the Thurso player and he romped home, in great delight to an eventual 3-2 win.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and, once again, lets hope Wick can grab all their players for the next battle.

Cookie's girl was so pleased to see him play she took a book for his match! Probably proved to be the better option, to be honest!

Thurso get off to a great start - 22/11/08 - (HOME)

Fruity-Loopy

What had the potential of being an interesting tussle with positions being battled for the up-and-coming Orkney match, turned into a fracas of the highest proportions - with a series of in-house fights within the Wick camp and, potentially, the only highlight of the day being Carly's 'fruity-loopy, get the booty' skewers (see picture below)...!!!

Thurso hosted the first Inter-Town leg versus Wick and romped to 7-1 victories in both 'A' and 'B' sections, leaving Wick with a tough task in the return leg.

Colin Paterson, Thurso and Andrew Bremner, Wick provided the excitement in the 'A' section.

Andrew pulled away to an early 2-0 lead but Colin found his decisive touch around the front of the court to level the scoreline.  But, after a serious of tight rallies in the final set, it was Andrew who would be victorious on this occasion.

Young Gavin Majilton, Wick put in a 'gutsy' performance against Stevie Spargo to grab the vital point for Wick in the 'B' section.

Well done to the Thurso side who did not let the 'antics' phase them and produced the goods on the day.

Congratulations to the Wick team members who - CORRECTLY DECIDED - to play for their club and put in satisfactory performances, in positions they may not usually be accustomed to.

But, lets hope they can sort out their disagreements as, everyone enjoys and welcomes the battle!

Note:-  Thank you to everyone who provided a feast of food and drinks on the day.

Some Thurso and Wick players.

Miss Mowat surprised everyone with a classroom lesson of food delights!
The first surprise was that she managed to make about 25 of these 'skewers'! But, the healthy part was - to get to the marshmallow in the centre, the fruit had to be divulged first. Great thinking and a teachers work never ends!
What will she surprise us with next???
