Wick squash club played host to the top county squash players at the end of March as the contest for trophies and titles commenced.

A reduced adult entry was made up for, with a very good junior entry, so an exciting weekend of squash was an-ticipated.

The juniors produced some excellent matches, with firm favourites Gary Beales and Owen Harrold, making it through to a tight Under 19 final. Owen won this time, in a reversal of the previous weeks Wick club junior final, where Gary was the victor.

ALL winners and runners up presented by Alison Henderson.

The under 19 plate was contested by two talented young players Kyle Henderson and Adam Bremner. Both show great potential and this time it was Adam who claimed the prize.

The under 15 competition also produced some exciting squash with a convincing victory for Dylan Hutchison over the fast improving James Alexander.

The under 15 plate had two of our youngest players in the final. It was won by Kieran Ross who at only 9 is showing great promise and determination, not to mention skill and coordination. His opponent Steven Sutherland just could'nt quite match the will to win of young Kieran.

The Ladies championship was run on a round robin basis with best of three games, earning points towards a group total. This produced a very close result, with Donna Ma-jilton, Mhari Vines and last years winner, Carole Mowat, all capable of winning, going into the final round of matches. As it turned out they each beat each other, to leave Donna and Mhari tied on 9 points but with Donna having beaten Mhari in their earlier match, Donna was declared the winner.

The Mens competition also produced some good squash, although the top two seeds were never really troubled, on their way to the final. Chris Taylor and Sean Miller produced a very high quality match with Chris taking an early lead using power, pace and accurate front court kills. Sean fought back into the match with his own blend of power, tight boasts and speed around the court. Chris steadied the ship and controlled the fifth game to become the new county champion.

The Mens plate gave the first round losers a chance to shine and gave Owen Harrold another final to contest. He played very well but lost out in the end to James Georgeson who had just a little more experience and accuracy on the day.

The Veterans championship brought two long time contestants to the final with Donald Pollard and Donald Durrand vieing for the honours. D Durrand took an early lead with powerful driving squash keeping D Pollard in the back corners. The match then swung in favour of D Pollard with an edge in fitness and some very powerful squash of his own bringing a deserved 3-1 win.

All the winners, except D Pollard, were first time county champions and all were under 25, so squash has plenty of new blood and is performing at a very high standard.
