Les cruises to his second League title in three years

As far as goals in life go, this seasons winner of the Thurso Squash Club League trophy sponsored by I&D Pollard Mortgage Shop, obviously rates his lovely wife and children at the top but one which rated highly on his list was managing to win this established trophy without moving from the top spot in League One.

Leslie Mackay, one of the top ranked players in the county accumulated sufficient points over a 12 month spell, well in advance of the final month to secure the title, for the second time in a few years. This now places, Les within Thurso Squash Club's elite hierarchy who have managed to win this title on more than one occasion. After a short conversation with the winner bringing up the suggestion of a third title, his comments were, "Bring it on....".

The second and third position silverware proved to be a tighter run to the finish line. Right to the last game to be precise.

With Ian McElroy looking like a certainty for second place it took a last gasped surge by father and son, James and John Georgeson to claim the suitable amount of points in their leagues to thwart Ian the solo success. At 5.40pm on the final day of the league season, James had just finished a tantalising tussle with his opponent but only managed enough points to tie with Ian. Forty minutes later, his son, John had just completed his second match of the day and required a 3-0 victory, which would've given him 6 points and own second position - but, whether it was down to fatigue, excitement, pressure - could only grab a 3-1 win giving him 5 points and making 2nd position a three way tie.

Once again, it has been an excellent season for the club but it all starts again and Thurso Squash Club are always looking for new entrants into the leagues.

Thurso Mortgage Shop have decided to continue their sponsorship of the League Trophy for the 2006-2007 season.
